La Voix Humaine was written by Jean Cocteau in 1930 in Paris, and set into music by Francis Poulenc in 1959. Yet, regardless of the time period, anyone can relate to waiting to hear back from a loved one.
Having only one side of the conversation allowed us to imagine a scenario where she (“elle” in French) and he had a relationship without clear beginning nor end. She thought they would get married, be each other’s only love, and would become the perfect wife that society expected her to be. She was already stuck in an imaginary relationship by the time the truth was revealed that his expectations were different - living an uncommitted life of love and sex aside with others. She now lives her terribly lonely life between the comfort of illusion and the fear of reality.
